The history of Les Lauves studio: from Cezanne to today

The dawn of Cezanne’s studio

Whilst painting outdoors one day, Paul Cezanne stumbled upon a hut and land for sale on Les Lauves hill. He fell in love with it and decided to buy it. In 1901, Cezanne’s Les Lauves studio was built.
The master himself designed the plans to tailor the building to his artistic needs. There are living rooms on the ground floor and a sprawling 50m² studio upstairs flooded with natural light.

Cezanne achieved his artistic peak in this legendary place. His walks through his olive grove inspired him and gave rise to masterpieces including The Bathers paintings.

Cezanne’s studio in Les Lauves was his last art workshop, until he died in 1906.

The future of Cezanne’s studio

Cezanne’s son sold the Les Lauves studio after he died. The man who bought it was the author and champion of Provençal culture, Marcel Provence. He took care of the lodge and Cezanne’s belongings until 1951. He made sure the studio itself remained untouched.
The studio saw off post-war building projects until John Rewald and James Lord had the Cezanne Memorial Committee buy Cezanne’s studio in 1954. It was gifted to Aix-Marseille University the same year. The Les Lauves Studio or Cezanne’s Studio opened to visitors as a museum on July 8th 1954.

Since then, the city council has been working with Aix-en-Provence Tourist Information to maintain the site to share a slice of local history and Cezanne’s life with visitors.

What to expect from Cezanne's studio

The studio’s restoration

A major renovation project is gradually restoring Cezanne’s studio to its former glory.

The fully-renovated lodge is being made into a museum devoted to the last creative period of the artist’s life. If you’d like to delve even deeper into Cezanne’s world, join a guided tour with insights from the writer and painter, Emile Bernard.
This is the first time the entire lodge will be open to visitors, so you can take a walk in the Father of Modern Art’s shoes. There’s more to it than the first floor studio; you can visit the ground floor rooms that have been out of bounds until now, such as the kitchen, dining room and lounge. They present a never-before-seen collection of Paul Cezanne’s belongings, letters and so much more.

Outside the studio

The garden is just like it was when the artist came outside to relax here. It gives you a unique opportunity for food for thought in the same place that inspired Cezanne.

Another major change is that the visitor centre is now in the Girard estate, a building next door to Cezanne’s studio. It houses the ticket desk, gift shop, classrooms and a café.

You won’t experience a journey into Cezanne’s world anywhere quite like it.
