The history of Jas de Bouffan mansion

Jas de Bouffan is a famous Aix estate that played a crucial role in the history of modern art. The Cezannes bought it in 1859 and it stayed in the family until 1899. For Paul Cezanne, it was a safe haven where he felt grounded as he travelled between Paris and Aix-en-Provence.

The mansion saw the artist blossom for 40 years, from his first experimental drawings in the Grand Salon to creating his masterpieces.
Cezanne painted a whole host of pieces here, such as still lifes, portraits and landscapes. The property itself, including its buildings and grounds, inspired 36 oil paintings and 17 watercolours. He also painted his famous artwork, The Card Players, in the manor between 1890 and 1895.

Jas de Bouffan is now under renovation to become a prime visitor centre celebrating Paul Cezanne and bringing you a unique experience.

Behind the scenes of the restoration

Jas de Bouffan, the mansion where Paul Cezanne and his family once lived, is gradually reopening to visitors from summer 2025. The iconic site and inspiration behind the Aix artist’s work provides a unique insight into the painter’s personal life.

The mansion is currently being restored to protect its original features and the first renovated rooms are now ready to explore: Cezanne’s very first studio, the large Provençal kitchen, Madame Cezanne’s bedroom and the sweeping staircase. Every room surrounds you in the artist’s family atmosphere, highlighting key parts of his everyday life and his artistic process.

An ever-changing site

The sprawling 5ha grounds are yours to explore on an artistic trail introducing you to the same landscapes Cezanne saw and painted.

You can also visit a temporary exhibition putting the spotlight on the restoration workers’ latest discoveries, such as the huge 5-6m2 mural Cezanne painted on the walls of the Grand Salon.

The new visitor, relaxation and restaurant areas will help make Jas de Bouffan a prime cultural destination in Aix-en-Provence.

As you wander around the mansion, you can see the restoration unfold on a fascinating journey that gets you up close and personal with the artist’s life and work.
