Exhibition « Aix and Cezanne »

June 6th 2025-January 5th 2026, Musée du Vieil Aix

Paul Cezanne is one of the most famous names from Aix-en-Provence, but has he always been?

The Aix et Cezanne exhibition explores the passionate and sometimes stormy relationship between the artist and his city. It delves into the artistic and cultural scene in late 19th and early 20th century Aix that set the backdrop to Cezanne’s life. The fascinating exhibition highlights the many artists and famous names inspired by Cezanne: Marcel Provence, the first person to buy Cezanne’s studio, Joseph Ravaisou and Edouard Ducros.

Paintings, photographs, archives and historical items provide an insight into how the artist was received by his hometown, from his rejection to his glorification.

Exhibition « L’expo des expos – Cezanne au Pavillon Vendôme en 1956 et 1961 »

June 19th-November 2nd 2025, Musée du Pavillon de Vendôme

“L’expo des expos – Cezanne au Pavillon Vendôme en 1956 et 1961” exhibition is curated by the French Art and History Museums and covers two exhibitions devoted to Aix’s Paul Cezanne, in 1956 and 1961. They were both hosted by the Pavillon Vendôme which set the scene for a bizarre news story at the time.

The exhibition in 1956 was devoted to the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death and featured 90 pieces, including several of Mont Sainte-Victoire.
The exhibition in 1961 was co-hosted by Vienna City Council and displayed sixty paintings by Cezanne. It resulted in a bizarre news story that was the talk of the town and the art world.

Take a trip back in time at Musée du Pavillon de Vendôme and revisit milestone moments from Cezanne’s legacy. The museum brings the past to life with photographs from the Henry Ely Foundation, press articles from around the world, archives, letters, posters, programmes, audiovisual content, a VR reconstruction and photographs of certain galleries.

Le Menu Cezanne 2025, the great cooking competition

Not many people know that Paul Cezanne wasn’t just a great artist, he was also a huge fan of Provençal food.
He had a weakness for simple dishes like potato salad in olive oil, daube (beef stew), pieds paquets (sheep’s feet and tripe stew), aïoli with dried fish as well as his favourite fruit, apples.
The artist loved hosting his friends for dinner or visiting Rosa Berne’s eatery in Le Tholonet for, what he called, the best duck and olives.

His love of food inspired an indulgent competition in his honour.
Restaurateurs in Aix-en-Provence can enter a competition to design a menu celebrating the classic Provençal cuisine Cezanne loved so much, overseen by Guillaume Gomez, the French Ambassador of Gastronomy and Food, Escoffier students and Masterchef magazine.
