What makes 2025 the year of Cezanne?

Aix-en-Provence is celebrating Cezanne in 2025.
It’s the year our city reunites with its most famous resident. It’s the year we pay tribute to the man, the artist and his work in the run-up to a major international exhibition, the renovation and reopening of his family home and last studio. It’s the year a new cycle begins, restoring Cezanne to his rightful place at the heart of his beloved city.

"When I was in Aix, I thought I'd be better off somewhere else, now I'm here, I miss Aix. When you're born there, it's hopeless, nothing else is good enough." Paul Cezanne

Iconic sites to revisit

Jas de Bouffan mansion

Jas de Bouffan mansion is currently under restoration. For Cezanne, it was a place to live, create and an “open-air” studio. It saw the artist’s genius blossom and was a real source of inspiration for him.
Jas de Bouffan is full of surprises. Just take the 2023 discovery of a piece that a 20 year old Cezanne painted on the Grand Salon’s walls.

Visitors can experience an educational trail, temporary galleries and the kitchen as it was when the artist lived here. The neighbouring farm building will also be renovated to house a Cezanne research and archive centre alongside classrooms for schools.
The grounds and gardens are like they were when Cezanne lived here and take you on a magical trip back in time.

Cezanne's studio

Explore the fascinating world of Paul Cezanne on a trip to his Les Lauves studio, an iconic site that’s about to begin an exciting new chapter. It was built in 1901 to the artist’s own plans and was the famous Aix painter’s final studio. It is now open to visitors as it continues its restoration.

Soak up the entire studio, including the ground floor rooms that were previously living areas, and see the household items that the artist used as models. The purchase of the Girard estate and new visitor centres have taken the site to another level.

Bibémus quarries

The Bibémus Quarries take you on a fascinating journey into a place that inspired Paul Cezanne just a few miles from Aix-en-Provence. The outstanding site is like an open-air museum. It was the artist’s playground between 1890 and 1904, where he honed his unique style among the striking rocks and majestic Mont Sainte-Victoire.

Just picture wandering along an artistic trail dotted with seven signature themes captured in paintings on display in the world’s best museums. The recent restoration means you can explore both the quarries and Cezanne’s legacy.
